    Field Tip: Sensible positioning of coordinated control points


    One of the hardest actions when digitising polylines is finding the correct position
    for a node at the extents of a structure (this could be corner of a wall, a ridgeline of
    a roof etc.) The reason is that whilst a little inaccuracy in the X and Y planes is
    tolerable, being a couple of pixels out in the depth sense could introduce great
    inaccuracies is a tie point goes off the building and into the open space behind it!

    Therefore, when picking tie points in Imagemaster, it is sensible to keep in places
    that avoid the problem described above i.e. away from edges or corners.

    This difficulty of picking corners or edges also applies to digitizing polylines on
    the stereo image. This tip can greatly improve this process. You will need a
    reflectorless total station to pick up your coordinated control that will be used as tie
    points during the image orientation process.

    Simply choose features at the extents of the survey area as some of your control
    points for coordination. These could include points along a roof ridgeline, the apex of a
    roof line, the corner of a wall or the corner of a door or window recess to name but a
    few.

    These will greatly improve the accuracy of polyline digitization if you use "snap to
    point" in the stereo screen. It will also give you the confidence that your model has
    real field survey control defining its limits.
